  • What Is an RFID Card and How Does It Work?

    RFID cards are widely used for access control, employee attendance, hotel rooms, membership programs, transportation and cashless payments. They allow users to identify themselves or access a service simply by placing a card near a reader. But what is inside an RFID card, and how does it work without a battery? What Is an RFID Card? RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. An RFID card is a contactless card that communicates with an RFID reader through radio waves. Most RFID cards look similar to standard bank cards, but they contain two important components: RFID chip: Stores the card's identification number or other data. Antenna: Receives signals from the reader and sends data back. The chip and antenna are embedded inside a card body, which is commonly made from PVC, PET, PETG or other durable materials. RFID cards can also be customized with logos, photos, names, serial numbers, barcodes and QR codes.   How Does an RFID Card Work? Most RFID cards are passive, meaning they do not contain a battery. They receive the energy needed for communication from the RFID reader. The process is simple: 1. The RFID reader generates a radio-frequency field. 2. The card enters the reader's operating range. 3. The card antenna receives the signal and activates the chip. 4. The chip sends its UID or stored data back to the reader. 5. The connected system verifies the information. 6. The system performs an action, such as opening a door or recording attendance. This process usually takes less than one second. In many systems, the card stores only a unique identification number. The user’s permissions, balance or membership information are managed in the connected software rather than directly on the card.   Main RFID Card Frequencies RFID cards operate at different frequencies. Each frequency is suitable for different applications. LF RFID Cards LF cards are commonly used in basic access-control and attendance systems. Typical chips include EM4200 and TK4100. HF RFID Cards HF cards operate at 13.56 MHz and are widely used for access control, hotel cards, transportation and payments. Common technologies include MIFARE, NTAG and ICODE. UHF RFID Cards UHF cards provide a longer reading distance and can be used for personnel identification, parking systems, events and asset tracking. RFID Cards vs. NFC Cards NFC is part of the wider RFID technology family, but not every RFID card is an NFC card. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and is designed for short-range interaction with compatible smartphones. LF cards and UHF cards cannot normally be read by standard NFC-enabled phones. If users need to tap the card with an iPhone or Android phone to open a website, contact page or digital profile, an NFC-compatible chip should be selected.   Common Applications of RFID Cards RFID cards are commonly used for: • Door access control • Employee attendance • Hotel room access • Membership and loyalty programs • Student identification • Public transportation • Cashless payment • Event and amusement park management • Vehicle and parking access Their contactless operation makes identification faster and more convenient than magnetic stripe or manual systems.   Are RFID Cards Secure? The security level depends on the chip and the complete system. Basic RFID cards may only transmit a fixed UID. They can be suitable for simple identification, but they should not be considered highly secure. Advanced RFID cards can support encryption, password protection and mutual authentication. For payment or high-security access control, it is important to use a secure chip together with proper key management and backend verification.   How to Choose the Right RFID Card Before choosing an RFID card, consider the following questions: • What will the card be used for? • What frequency and standard does the reader support? • What reading distance is required? • Does the card need to be rewritable? • Is encryption required? • Must it work with NFC smartphones? • Is custom printing or data encoding needed? The RFID card must be compatible with the reader and software.
