Auburn University RFID Lab Opens Aerospace Division

March 09, 2023

To meet the growing demand for radio frequency identification (RFID) technology support in a variety of industries, the RFID Lab at Auburn University has opened a new Division of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Baggage tracking support for airlines

One important application of RFID in aviation is baggage tracking, and many airlines are testing or deploying RFID at airports. as suitcases or other personal items are received, sorted, routed and transported on a passenger's flight, they automatically read the built-in RFID tags on the baggage tags.

RFID in Outer Space

The aerospace industry has been expanding as private space companies join NASA in sending assets out of the Earth's atmosphere. RFID tags have been used for cargo and assets that travel on NASA flights or are used on the International Space Station. The technology helps ensure that cargo is loaded before rockets take off and allows personnel on the station to find the equipment they need faster.
