RFID promises to reduce motorcycle crime in the Philippines

RFID tags are small electronic devices that store information and can communicate with other devices using radio waves. They are used in a variety of applications, from tracking inventory in warehouses to monitoring the movements of livestock.

Recently, the Philippine Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights held its second public hearing on Wednesday local time on Senate Bill No. 159 - Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act filed by Senator Ejercito.

Instead of requiring bulky front license plate numbers on all motorcycles, Senator Ejercito suggested the installation of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags containing the identity of the driver. "With RFID, the license plate number cannot be transferred from one vehicle to another. And we can put additional information in the RFID, such as the owner's name or whether the vehicle has been tagged with an alarm,"

Encela said the RFID can also contain basic information about the motorcycle - the filing number, license plate number, chassis number and engine number.
